Common Indoor Air Pollutants

While outdoor air pollution garners a great deal of attention, we are beginning to realize how dangerous indoor air quality can be to our health.

  • Many Americans may spend as much as 90% of their time indoors, either at home or in the office.
  • The cleaning products and personal care items that we use in our homes are considerably more likely to cause cancer than are pollutants we find in the air outside.
  • Second-hand smoke, a major indoor air pollutant, contains thousands of chemicals and over 200 known poisons including formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.  Second-hand smoke also contains some 43 carcinogens (which are substances that will produce cancer).
  • Adults and children all across America suffer from asthma and the number grows significantly every day.  Some of the most common triggers of an asthma attack are airborne contaminants such as dust, allergens (including pollen, mold, animal hair or fur, household dust and dust mites), smoke, strong fumes and inhaled irritants.

At least half of ALL illnesses are caused by, or aggravated by, indoor pollutants.  American homes may have airborne pollutants 25 to 100 times that of the outside air and a pollutant released indoors is a thousand times more likely to reach our lungs that a pollutant released outdoors.

Indoor Air Pollutants
Pollutant
Major Indoor Sources
Potential Health Effects*
Tobacco Smoke (Secondhand smoke)
Cigarettes, cigars, and pipes
Respiratory irritation, bronchitis and pneumonia in children, emphysema, lung cancer and heart disease
Carbon Monoxide
Tobacco smoke; wood stoves and unvented or malfunctioning gas appliances
Fatal at high concentrations; impaired vision and mental functioning; headache; nausea; angina
Nitrogen Oxides
Unvented or malfunctioning gas appliances
Causes increased respiratory infections in children; eye, nose, and throat irritation
Organic Chemicals
Aerosol sprays, dry cleaned clothing; solvents; pesticides; cleaning agents; moth repellents; glues; paints; air fresheners
Eye, nose and throat irritation; headaches; various types of cancer; loss of coordination; damage to liver, kidney and brain
Formaldehyde
Furnishings, wallpaper; durable press fabrics; pressed wood products such as plywood and particleboard
Headache; allergic reactions; eye, nose, and throat irritation; cancer
Respirable Particles (These are particles or aerosols capable of being inhaled into the deep lung, < 3 microns in diameter)
Cigarettes, wood stoves fireplaces, aerosol sprays and household dust
Increased susceptibility to respiratory infections and bronchitis; lung cancer; eye, nose and throat irritation
Biological Agents (Animal Dander, Dust Mites, Bacteria, Viruses, Fungus and Molds.)
Household dust and dust mites; pets and pet dander; bedding; furnishings; poorly maintained air conditioners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers; wet or moist structures
Eye, nose and throat irritation, asthma, allergic reactions, influenza and other infectious diseases
Asbestos
Fireproofing and acoustical materials; damaged or deteriorating insulating and building materials
Asbestosis, lung cancer, benign or malignant mesothelioma as well as other cancers
Lead
Sanding or open-flame burning of lead paint; household dust
Anemia; kidney damage; growth retardation; Nerve and brain damage, particularly in children
Radon
Soil under buildings, some earth derived construction materials and groundwater
Lung cancer
* Damage and symptoms depends on the amount of pollutant that is inhaled and the duration and susceptibility of individual exposed.
